Child Soldiers
CHILD SOLDIERS
Hi, Im a year 10 student from New Zealand at Elim Christian College in Auckland. In social studies we've been studying child soldiers. We were then assigned to the task of making a website to raise awareness of this terrible problem.
WHO?
If you didn't know a child soldier is someone under the age of 18 who is or has been recruited or used by an army or armed group and not just boys but girls also used as fighters, cooks, porters (person who carries stuff like baggage around), messengers, spies or for sexual purposes.
WHAT?
According to humanium
The right to equality, without distinction on account of race, religion or national origin.
The right to special protection for the child’s physical, mental and social development.
The right to a name and a nationality.
The right to adequate nutrition, housing and medical services.
The right to special education and treatment when a child is physically or mentally handicapped.
The right to understanding and love by parents and society.
The right to recreational activities and free education.
The right to be among the first to receive relief in all circumstances.
The right to protection against all forms of neglect, cruelty and exploitation.
The right to be brought up in a spirit of understanding, tolerance, friendship among peoples, and universal brotherhood.
WHEN?
You may think child soldiers have only been recently used, maybe about 100 year at the most but you're wrong, child soldiers have been used for centuries The Spartans are said to be the first to use child soldiers starting military training at the age of only 7. Child soldiers were also said to be used in ancieient roman wars recruiting under the age of 16 but child soldiers were used in World War Two as well in German and Russian armed troops. Japaneese children volunteered to be suicide bombers due to the traumatic experiences they had gone through.
WHERE?
War is bad enough as it is sending adults but sending kids is disgraceful and they are found in countries all over the world. Some of the countries that use child soldiers to this day include Afghanistan, Burundi, Burma, Central African republic, Chad, Colombia, Democratic republican of Congo, India, Indonesia (until 2005), Iraq, Israel, Ivory Coast, Nepal (until 2006), Philippines, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Thailand.

MAP OF CHILD SOLDIERS
HOW?
in some countries kids are forced to join an army or armed group through threat. They are also trated by their families and communities to the armed forces so they wont attack that community. Children can also be recruited by using the tatic that the LRA (Lords Resistance Army, Joseph Kony's child army) created by taking them right from where they're living and placing them with a uniform and gun on the ground of war. in very few cases, kids actually volunteer due to the fact that they are so poor that being recruited is their only shot at survival.
WHY?
Children are used as soldiers because they are easy to brainwash, they are vulnerable, naive, full of energy, are small (so you can take lots of them in not that much space) and kids are being born basically every second so if one bunch dies you just and there bam you have a whole new bunch of soldiers present and ready for duty. I dont know about you but i think this is really sad, killing off some kids for what they believe in. Kids are forced to do it and are also so poor they become so desprate to live this is their way out.
FACTS ABOUT CHILD SOLDIERS
-Girls make up an estimated 10-30% of child soldiers used for fighting or other purposes.
-Recruitment of child soldiers breaks seven human rights laws.
-Kids are sometimes under the age of 10 when recruited.
-some child soldiers are forced to act violently towards their family or community.
